“It was late, even for me. I decided to take a short cut, making my way around the abandoned mental health facility on old Route 16. It should have shaved fifteen minutes off my trip home.
“I didn’t see her until it was too late. I slammed on my brakes and froze.
She stared back at me a moment, then ran at me with a scream that curdled my blood.
I don’t know what she wanted, but she was determined to get to me. I was too scared at the time to care what happened to her. I just gunned it. She rolled off the hood and disappeared.
